The community garden lies off the main A77 in the harbour area of Girvan. It sits to the rear of Knockcushan House, an imposing house next to the Fish Inn. Go to the furthest end of the car park and you will see the entrance to the garden. The Garden during summer 2010 (right) |
The Garden is now open from Monday to Thursday 10am-1pm and Sunday 1-4pm. We are dependent on volunteers to keep the garden open. If you think you would like to help please contact Julie Campbell on 01465 713439.
Behind Knockcushan House, the former Town House which overlooks Girvan's picturesque harbour, there was an neglected garden which once was the Council's plant nursery. Unused for 30 years, it was a mass of sycamore and brambles, but on the positive side, is enclosed by 10ft walls, and faces south. Many local people remember it well, when it was a thriving nursery.
Make It Happen held community consultations during Autumn 2007 to see if there was enough interest locally to see the garden brought back into use as a community garden. The idea created a groundswell of interest, people came forward to help and we formed 'The Community Garden Group'.
Since then Girvan Community Garden has become a company limited by guarantee and a charity.
