Another project of Make It Happen!'s is Bairns 'n Books Story Sack Library.  The project is being led by Etta Auld, who is a retired primary school teacher and has a long working knowledge of educational needs of children and parents.

We are working in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council's Community Learning and Development Department. The sacks will be used as a tool for developing reading and spelling skills of the children, and can help with adult literacy too.

Story sack workshop: Saturday November 28th 2009

Here are Audrey and David filling the bags with the assorted resources Etta has gathered over the last few months.

Funding Success for Storysack Workshops - Congratulations to Etta who has secured funding for the first year of storysack workshops from the Renfrew Circuit of the Methodist church, AND funding from the Methodist Church Scotland Division for the first year's  running of the storysack library, together with sufficient funding for two part time staff.

We want to develop a range of at least 50 story sacks which will form an independent library in the town. This will be accessed by parents and teachers from all schools, and will be appropriate for the 3-8 yrs age range.

An integral part of the process is making the sacks themselves, which will provide a sociable and creative forum for parents and other interested folk to select the story they wish to feature on the story sack and explore methods of illustrating the story.  We hope to also run story-telling workshops for parents and grandparents.

A pilot session of story sack illustration was undertaken by enterprise crafts students at Carrick Buildings Learning Centre with tutor Theresa Lakey. See photos of their exhibition here.
